Why Fencing Costs Vary So Much
A fencing quote in South Africa can range from R200 per metre to R3,000 per metre for the same linear distance, depending entirely on the material chosen, the terrain, the height required, and the labour involved. Understanding what drives these differences makes it easier to compare quotes fairly and avoid paying for more than you need — or less than is safe.
Palisade Fencing
Galvanised steel palisade fencing is the most popular security fencing option in South Africa for residential and commercial properties. It is visible, robust, and difficult to climb or cut through without significant effort.
- 1.8m standard palisade (50x8mm flat bar) — R380 to R550 per metre installed
- 2.1m security palisade (anti-climb spear top) — R450 to R650 per metre installed
- Powder-coated palisade (colour finish) — add R80 to R150 per metre for the coating
Palisade requires concrete foundations for the posts, typically at 2.5m spacing. Rocky ground or sloping sites add excavation costs of R50 to R200 per post position.
Precast Concrete Fencing
Precast concrete panels (also called pre-cast slats or vibracrete) are widely used for boundary walls and privacy fencing, particularly in Gauteng and the Western Cape.
- 1.5m precast panels with poles — R300 to R450 per metre installed
- 1.8m precast panels with poles — R380 to R520 per metre installed
- 2.1m precast — R450 to R650 per metre installed
Precast offers good privacy and moderate security. It is not climb-proof. Combining precast at the base with palisade on top is a popular hybrid solution for perimeter security.
Clearvu / Weld Mesh Fencing
Clearvu and similar rigid mesh panels offer visibility (unlike precast) and reasonable security. Widely used around industrial properties, estates, and schools.
- 1.8m Clearvu panel fencing — R450 to R650 per metre installed
- 2.4m Clearvu with anti-climb top — R600 to R900 per metre installed
Timber and Wooden Fencing
Timber fencing is used primarily for garden boundaries, privacy screens, and aesthetic applications rather than security perimeters.
- Treated pine lap and cap or tongue and groove (1.5–1.8m) — R350 to R600 per metre installed
- Hardwood timber slat fencing — R600 to R1,200 per metre installed depending on species and design
Timber requires sealing or oiling every one to two years and has a lifespan of 10 to 20 years depending on the species and maintenance. Softwood pine without treatment will rot in three to five years in humid conditions.
Electric Fence on Top of Existing Fencing
Adding an electric fence to an existing palisade or wall adds R150 to R350 per metre for the electric fence strands, brackets, and energiser connection. A standalone energiser for a residential property costs R1,500 to R4,000 depending on the zone capacity required.
What Adds Cost
- Rocky or hard ground requiring heavy excavation — add R50 to R200 per post
- Sloping sites requiring stepped or raked fencing
- Long runs with multiple gates — pedestrian gate R2,500 to R6,000; vehicle gate R8,000 to R25,000
- Removal and disposal of existing fencing — R30 to R80 per metre
Getting Quotes
Get three written quotes specifying the same material, height, and post spacing. Ask each contractor to confirm the post depth and concrete footing specification — undersized footings are the most common cause of fencing that leans or fails in wind. Retain 10% of the payment until the fence is complete and you have signed off on the installation.
