What separates a competent GP from one that deserves your trust comes down to demonstrability. Does the practice maintain current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa? Can they issue a certificate of compliance for occupational health requirements without sending you elsewhere? When medical aid claims get rejected, do they troubleshoot or blame the scheme? Can they manage chronic conditions without unnecessary specialist referrals, or do they default to referral whenever something gets complicated? A good GP knows their limits and refers appropriately—but they also know what they can confidently manage in-house. They keep clear, detailed patient records. They listen to what you're actually saying, not just what you think you should say. These aren't intangibles; they're observable, verifiable competencies.
