When evaluating a university, look past marketing and ask what actually separates adequate from solid academic delivery: Are there researchers actively publishing in their field? Do lecturers have industry experience or are they strictly theorists? Can students access labs, libraries, and computing facilities when they need them, or does load-shedding routinely close facilities? Are student support services—counselling, academic writing help, career guidance—well-staffed or understaffed? University of the Witwatersrand's reputation rests partly on historical standing, but genuine quality shows in whether postgraduate students can complete their research, whether undergraduate classes are taught by experienced academics or graduate assistants, and whether the institution invests in infrastructure maintenance despite government funding shortfalls. Ask current students and recent graduates whether their degrees opened doors or left them underequipped.
