The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children
Supporting women and children who have experienced gender-based violence or trauma involves work that doesn't fit into neat categories. The Saartjie Baartman Centre engages across sheltering, trauma counselling, legal advice navigation, economic empowerment training, and community education—each layer connected to the others. In the Western Cape context, where intimate partner violence rates remain high and systems like law enforcement or social services can feel unreachable, this integrated approach means a woman escaping violence isn't directed to one place for safety and another for legal help and a third for economic rebuilding. The organisation works with the grain of how survivors actually need help—simultaneous, interconnected, and long-term. This complexity requires sustained expertise across multiple domains and constant relationship-building with the court, police, shelters, and employers.
