OpenUp exists because Cape Town—like much of South Africa—has structural information gaps that affect people's actual access to rights and services. They build tools and platforms that help residents navigate systems that weren't designed for transparency: municipal services, housing procedures, government benefits, civic participation pathways. Their work sits at the intersection of technology and advocacy, making data legible and actionable for communities that would otherwise have to navigate bureaucracy with incomplete information. In a city where documentation, access, and power are unequally distributed, they're focused on shifting what people can see and therefore what they can claim.
