Understanding the Full Cost of New Tyres
When South Africans compare tyre prices, they typically compare the advertised tyre price and forget to ask about fitting, balancing, valve replacement, and old tyre disposal. The difference between the advertised price and what you actually pay can be R300–R600 per tyre on an average fitment. This guide breaks down every component.
Tyre Prices by Category (2026)
Tyre prices in South Africa vary by brand tier, size, and specification. A broadly useful guide by category:
Passenger vehicle tyres (common sizes: 195/65R15, 205/55R16, 225/45R17):
- Budget / house brands — R600 to R1,000 per tyre. Chinese-manufactured brands. Adequate for normal urban driving. Shorter tread life and higher rolling resistance than premium.
- Mid-range — R1,000 to R1,800 per tyre. Brands like Nexen, Hankook, Maxxis, Cooper. Good quality-to-cost ratio for most drivers.
- Premium — R1,800 to R3,500 per tyre. Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Pirelli, Goodyear. Best wet grip, tread life, and fuel efficiency. Worth the premium for highway driving or safety-conscious buyers.
SUV and bakkie tyres (common sizes: 265/65R17, 235/65R17, 31x10.5R15):
- Budget: R1,200 to R1,800 per tyre
- Mid-range: R1,800 to R2,800 per tyre
- Premium: R2,800 to R5,000 per tyre
Additional Costs to Expect
- Fitting per tyre — R80 to R200 per tyre depending on the centre and tyre size. Runflat tyres, low-profile tyres, and large 4x4 tyres attract a premium for fitting due to difficulty.
- Balancing per wheel — R80 to R150 per wheel. Required with every new tyre fitment. Do not accept a quote that excludes balancing.
- Valve replacement — R25 to R60 per valve. Rubber valves should be replaced with every new tyre; metal TPMS valves should be inspected and replaced if worn.
- Old tyre disposal — R20 to R50 per tyre at most centres. Some waive this; others charge separately. Ask upfront.
- Wheel alignment — R350 to R600 for a standard four-wheel alignment. Recommended with every tyre change and essential if the previous tyres showed uneven wear.
Total Installed Cost — Example
For four mid-range passenger tyres (R1,400 each) with full service:
- 4 tyres: R5,600
- Fitting (4 × R120): R480
- Balancing (4 × R100): R400
- Valves (4 × R40): R160
- Disposal (4 × R30): R120
- Wheel alignment: R450
- Total: R7,210
A centre advertising "R1,400 per tyre" that quotes R5,600 for four on the phone will typically invoice R6,760 to R7,500 when you arrive. Ask for the all-in quote including fitting, balancing, valves, and disposal before committing.
When to Replace Tyres
Replace tyres when tread depth reaches 2mm (the legal minimum is 1mm but 2mm is the safety threshold for wet conditions). Check tread depth with a gauge (R30–R80 from any auto parts store) or the tread wear indicators moulded into the tyre grooves. Also replace if you notice: cracking or bulges in the sidewall, vibration that balancing has not resolved, or uneven wear that suggests an alignment or suspension problem.
