When you're evaluating a secondary school, depth matters more than polish. Look at what happens in actual classrooms—are teachers engaging with kids who struggle alongside those flying ahead, or are they teaching to the middle? Check whether the school can articulate what it's actually trying to build in its students, beyond pass rates and university acceptance. Ask about discipline: does it exist to control, or to teach responsibility? Visit during ordinary Tuesday afternoons, not special event days. A school that takes seriously the messy work of adolescent development—friendships, identity, failure, resilience—usually shows it in how staff talk about students and how students talk about the school. The infrastructure matters too: labs that work, libraries used, sports facilities that serve the entire cohort.
