Volunteer Wildfire Services
Cape Town's wildfire season transforms the landscape every summer, and tackling these blazes requires crews trained in terrain most urban firefighters never encounter. Volunteer Wildfire Services works across the fynbos belt and mountain slopes surrounding the city, where wind-driven fires move unpredictably through dense vegetation and threaten scattered homes and infrastructure in the urban-wildland interface. The work involves understanding fire behaviour in scrubland, coordinating with aerial support and municipal resources, navigating rocky ground without road access, and protecting properties in areas where water supply is limited. Winter rainfall has done little to reduce fuel loads, keeping crews busy through what should be quieter months.
