Soweto's economic and social landscape has always shaped who could access university education and what that education meant for their futures. The presence of Wits here—one of South Africa's research universities—shifted possibilities for generations of Soweto residents who might otherwise have travelled daily to Braamfontein or had to leave Johannesburg entirely. Today, students from Soweto still face real barriers—transport costs, load-shedding disrupting online learning, family economic pressures—but they can pursue engineering, commerce, sciences, and humanities without the assumption they must leave.
