Early childhood education quality separates dramatically between schools that understand child development and those applying a primary-school mindset to younger children. What matters at foundation level isn't how many letters a child can identify—it's whether the environment supports play-based learning, emotional regulation, gross and fine motor development, and social negotiation. Good pre-primary practitioners recognise that transitions matter: the move from home care or informal crèche into a structured setting, and later the move to Grade R and Grade 1. They track individual progress carefully, communicate specifically with parents about what their child is doing and why, and can identify when a child might need additional support. Specialist training in early childhood development and appropriate teacher-to-child ratios are what genuinely separate experienced providers from those simply minding children.
