The difference between a competent school and an average one rarely shows in brochures—it lives in the details parents discover after enrolment. Look at actual grade progression data: are learners in the Foundation Phase acquiring phonics and numeracy at age-appropriate levels, or are gaps widening by Grade 3? Notice whether the school can name specific intervention strategies for struggling readers, or whether it uses vague terms like "support." Strong schools publish their learner-teacher ratios by grade and stick to them; weak ones allow Grade 1 classrooms to balloon to 35 pupils. Observe whether senior staff can discuss individual learners' strengths unprompted, or whether they speak only in statistics. Check whether the school's fee structure is transparent or whether parents discover additional costs mid-year. A school worth your investment can articulate its curriculum approach, show evidence of assessment data driving instruction, and demonstrate that staff turnover is low enough for continuity. These markers matter more than facilities or reputation.
