History
The area was settled by the Voortrekkers in the 1840s, and the town of Vereeniging — meaning "union" in Afrikaans — was formally established in 1892 as a coal mining and industrial town. The signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging on 31 May 1902 at the farm Melrose ended the Anglo-Boer War and established the terms under which the Boer Republics were incorporated into the British Empire. The discovery of coal and later iron ore made Vereeniging a major industrial centre through the 20th century. The city was incorporated into the Emfuleni Local Municipality in 2000.
What Vereeniging is Known For
Vereeniging is historically significant as the site of the 1902 Peace Treaty that ended the Anglo-Boer War — the farm Melrose where negotiations took place is marked with a memorial. The Vaal River at Vereeniging and the adjacent Vaal Dam are major recreational resources for southern Gauteng, drawing boaters, water skiers, and fishermen from across the province. The Three Rivers area, where the Vaal and Klip rivers meet, is the town's most recognisable geographic feature.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The Vereeniging CBD is an older industrial-era commercial centre. Three Rivers is the main residential suburb with a mix of older homes and commercial strips. Peacehaven and Arcon Park are established middle-class residential areas. Boipatong — the site of the 1992 massacre that derailed the CODESA negotiations — is a township within the broader Vereeniging area. The Vaal riverfront has residential properties and boating clubs that attract Gauteng weekenders.
Economy & Industry
Vereeniging's economy is anchored by manufacturing and industry — the Vaal Triangle was one of South Africa's key industrial zones with steel production at Vanderbijlpark's Arcelor Mittal plant and chemical production at Sasolburg driving the regional economy for decades. The industrial base has contracted with declining steel production. The Vaal Dam and river recreation economy supports a hospitality sector. Retail serves a large residential population across the Emfuleni municipality.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Vereeniging is approximately 65 km from Johannesburg on the N1 and N3 — about 45 minutes. The Vaal River and Vaal Dam are excellent recreational resources; house boat rentals and river lodge accommodation are popular weekend options from Johannesburg. Traffic on the N1 south from Johannesburg can be heavy on Friday afternoons. The industrial character of the city centre contrasts with the pleasant riverfront areas.
