History
Vanderbijlpark was established in 1943 by the Iron and Steel Corporation (ISCOR) to house workers for its new steel plant on the Vaal. The entire city was planned from scratch — streets, schools, hospitals, and housing — reflecting the industrial paternalism of the era. When ISCOR was privatised to become ArcelorMittal South Africa, Vanderbijlpark's identity remained inseparable from steel production, though the economy has since diversified.
What Vanderbijlpark is Known For
The city is synonymous with steel manufacturing — the ArcelorMittal Vanderbijlpark Works is one of the largest steel plants in the southern hemisphere. The Vaal River is a major draw, with boating, fishing, and weekend resorts popular with Gauteng residents. The nearby Vaal Marina and Emerald Resort attract water-sports enthusiasts year-round. The North-West University Vaal Campus is a significant educational institution in the area.

Retail is centred on Vanderbijlpark CBD and the Vaal Mall. The Vaal triangle — shared with Vereeniging and Sasolburg — forms one of South Africa's most significant industrial complexes, and light manufacturing has expanded in recent decades.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
The Vaal Mall is the region's largest retail destination and a practical first stop for shopping. The R59 and N1 provide good highway access to Johannesburg (70 km north). The Vaal River is the city's greatest leisure asset — numerous resorts and picnic spots line the banks. Summers are warm and stormy; winters are cold with occasional frost, so pack accordingly for an extended Vaal River stay.
