History
Scottburgh was established in the 1850s and grew as a coastal resort for the sugar-farming community of the South Coast hinterland. The sugar mill at nearby Sezela has been a major employer for generations. The town developed its holiday resort identity through the mid-20th century as rail access from Durban improved. Today it sits comfortably on the South Coast strip between Umkomaas and Pennington, each with their own beach character.
What Scottburgh is Known For
Scottburgh is known for its Blue Flag beaches with Sharks Board nets — Scott's Beach and Scottburgh Main Beach are the primary swimming spots. The nearby Cutty Sark Hotel is a South Coast institution. Umkomaas, just north, is one of South Africa's premier scuba diving destinations with Aliwal Shoal — a warm-water reef and shark dive site — 9 km offshore. The South Coast is known for the "sardine run" (June–July), one of the greatest ocean wildlife spectacles.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre along Scott Road is the commercial hub. The esplanade and beach precinct have restaurants and accommodation. Retirement villages and holiday flats are prominent in the residential areas. Gcilima township serves the permanent local population. Pennington and Ifafa Beach are quieter residential areas to the south. The Ifafa River estuary is a fishing and kayaking spot popular with locals.
Economy & Industry
Tourism and retirement are the primary economic drivers. The beach holiday economy — accommodation, restaurants, surf shops — is the main industry. The Sezela sugar mill nearby is a significant industrial employer. Retail serves both the permanent community and the seasonal holiday influx. The scuba diving industry at Umkomaas/Aliwal Shoal generates tourism income. Healthcare and retail serve the broader South Coast catchment.

The sardine run (June–July) is best viewed from Scott's Beach with binoculars. The Cutty Sark hotel bar is a South Coast institution worth a drink. Book accommodation 3–6 months ahead for December. The warm water (22–26°C) is swimmable year-round. A private hospital is nearby.
