History
Established in 1821 as a landing point for the 1820 British Settlers, Port Alfred was named after Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's second son, who visited the Cape Colony in 1860. The town grew as a small coastal trading post and holiday resort for the Eastern Cape. The Kowie River provided the original harbour, though this proved too shallow for significant trade. Today the river mouth marina and yacht basin are the town's defining feature.
What Port Alfred is Known For
Port Alfred is known for its marina and the Kowie River, which can be navigated by boat 21 km upstream through unspoiled riparian bush — the Kowie River Canoe Trail is one of the Eastern Cape's best short adventures. The East Beach and West Beach are popular swimming beaches on the Indian Ocean. The Kowie Museum documents the history of the 1820 Settlers. Affordable, uncrowded beaches and a warm climate make it popular with Eastern Cape retirees.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town is built on both banks of the Kowie River. The marina and yacht basin on the east bank are the lifestyle hub. West Bank has a more established residential character. Nemato township is the main residential area for the broader population. The beachfront esplanade has restaurants and accommodation. East Beach is the main swimming beach. Surrounding farmland produces citrus, dairy, and livestock.
Economy & Industry
Tourism, retirement, and holiday accommodation are the primary economic drivers. The marina lifestyle economy — boat maintenance, charters, fishing — is significant. Retail and services cater to a permanent residential and visitor community. Agriculture in the Kowie River valley and surrounding farms produces citrus and livestock. Rhodes University in Grahamstown (50 km inland) generates indirect economic benefits.
