History
Middelburg in Mpumalanga (not to be confused with Middelburg in the Eastern Cape) was established in 1864 as a market town for the eastern Highveld. The arrival of the railway and the discovery of coal in the region stimulated industrial development. The establishment of Columbus Stainless Steel (formerly ISCOR) as a major employer transformed the town's economy in the 1960s. Today Middelburg is one of Mpumalanga's most important industrial centres.
