History
Diamonds were discovered in the Kimberley area in 1871 on a farm called Vooruitzicht, triggering one of the most explosive mining rushes in history. Within months tens of thousands of fortune-seekers had converged on what became the mining camp of Kimberley, named after the British Colonial Secretary Lord Kimberley. Cecil John Rhodes arrived in 1871 and systematically acquired claims to form De Beers Consolidated Mines. The Anglo-Boer War siege of Kimberley lasted 124 days from October 1899 to February 1900, during which Rhodes remained in the city. Sol Plaatje, one of South Africa's most important early Black writers and political figures, was born near Kimberley and kept a remarkable diary of the siege.
What Kimberley is Known For
Kimberley is defined above all by the Big Hole — an open-cast diamond mine that was dug entirely by hand and pick between 1871 and 1914, reaching 240 metres deep and 463 metres wide, making it the largest hand-dug excavation in the world. The Kimberley Mine Museum, built around and over the Big Hole, is one of South Africa's best-presented historical attractions. The McGregor Museum, the William Humphreys Art Gallery, and the Honoured Dead Memorial are significant cultural institutions for a city of its size. Kimberley is also known as the birthplace of the South African armoured car during the siege of 1899.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The CBD retains its Victorian-era diamond boom character along Dutoitspan Road and Du Toitspan Street, with several significant historic buildings. Belgravia and Herlea are established older residential suburbs. Galeshewe is the large township to the west of the city, historically the heart of Kimberley's Black community and the birthplace of significant ANC and SACP political activity. The Sol Plaatje University campus has introduced a new academic dimension to the city.
Economy & Industry
Kimberley's economy has diversified from its diamond origins but remains heavily influenced by the mining and government sectors. The Northern Cape provincial government administration is the dominant employer. De Beers still operates in the region though the surface mining that defined the city has long been exhausted. Sol Plaatje University, established in 2014, has introduced a growing education economy. Retail serves a large surrounding Northern Cape hinterland.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Kimberley is approximately 480 km from Johannesburg on the N12 — about 4.5 hours. The Big Hole and Kimberley Mine Museum is a half-day visit and one of South Africa's genuine historical highlights. The climate is dry and sunny for most of the year with very hot summers (regularly exceeding 38°C) and cold winter nights. Kimberley is a practical overnight stop on the N12 between Johannesburg and Cape Town via the Northern Cape.
