History
Established in the 1840s as a crossing point on the Umgeni River, Howick grew around the natural landmark of the Howick Falls. It developed as a transport and administrative hub for the KwaZulu-Natal midlands. The town is also historically significant as the site of Nelson Mandela's arrest on 5 August 1962, when he was captured while travelling in disguise near Howick — the spot is now marked by a bronze statue.
What Howick is Known For
Howick is known for the Howick Falls — a 95-metre waterfall cascading into a gorge that the Zulu called "kwa Noqaza" (place of the tall one). The Midlands Meander route, which runs from Howick through Nottingham Road to Mooi River, is one of South Africa's most popular artisan tourism routes with over 150 studios, farms, and food producers. The Nelson Mandela Capture Site near Howick has a striking statue and museum.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre along Howick main road has restaurants, galleries, and antique shops catering to Midlands Meander visitors. Yale Road and surrounding streets are quiet residential areas. Mpophomeni township is to the east, home to the majority of the local population. The Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve provides a green corridor along the Umgeni River. Surrounding farms are a mix of cattle, dairy, and market gardening operations.
Economy & Industry
Tourism and the Midlands Meander are the primary economic drivers. Retail, restaurants, galleries, and accommodation catering to weekend visitors from Durban and Pietermaritzburg generate significant income. Dairy and cattle farming in the surrounding midlands support agri-processing. Light manufacturing and services serve the local residential community. The Nelson Mandela Capture Site adds heritage tourism to the mix.
