History
Hoedspruit (meaning "hat stream" in Afrikaans, named after a stream on the original farm) developed in the 20th century as a small agricultural and military town — it has a South African Air Force base. The opening of Hoedspruit Airport to commercial flights from Johannesburg made the private reserves much more accessible, dramatically accelerating tourism growth.
