History
Graskop was established in 1890 during the gold rush era, serving as a supply point for prospectors working the escarpment goldfields. Its name means "grass head" in Afrikaans, describing the open grassland plateau on which it sits. Tourism replaced mining as the primary economic driver in the 20th century, and today the town is one of the busiest stop-overs on the Mpumalanga tourist trail.
What Graskop is Known For
Graskop is best known for its pancake restaurants — Harrie's Pancakes is an institution that draws visitors from across South Africa. The Graskop Gorge Lift, a glass-sided gondola descending 51 metres into the gorge below, is a major attraction. The world-famous Big Swing at the gorge offers bungee-style jumps into the forest canyon. God's Window, Pinnacle Rock, and the Three Rondavels are all within 30 minutes of town.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town is compact, centred along Louis Trichardt Street and Church Street. Most accommodation, restaurants, and curio shops are within walking distance of the main road. The industrial area is minimal. Surrounding farms grow timber and macadamia nuts. There are no large suburban developments — Graskop's appeal is its small-town character on the edge of the escarpment.
Economy & Industry
Tourism is the overwhelming economic driver. Restaurants, accommodation, craft shops, and adventure activities dominate the local economy. Forestry and timber processing are secondary industries, as large pine and eucalyptus plantations cover the surrounding escarpment. Macadamia farming is growing in the lowveld surroundings. The town serves as a resupply hub for visitors to Kruger's western border.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Graskop is 55 km from Hazyview and 60 km from Pilgrim's Rest — both easy day trips. The R532 Panorama Route loops past all major viewpoints. Book accommodation in advance during school holidays and Easter weekends when the town fills completely. Bring a rain jacket — the escarpment receives heavy summer rainfall. The gorge lift and Big Swing can be booked at the Graskop Gorge Lift Company on the main road.
