History
Grabouw was named after the German town of Grabów, home of many of the original settlers who farmed the Elgin Valley in the 19th century. The cool, high-altitude climate of the valley proved exceptionally well suited to deciduous fruit cultivation. The deciduous fruit industry took off in the early 20th century with the extension of the railway and refrigerated transport, allowing Elgin apples and pears to reach markets across South Africa and internationally.
What Grabouw is Known For
Grabouw is known as the apple capital of South Africa — the Elgin Valley's cool summers and well-drained soils produce South Africa's finest apples and pears, exported globally. The Elgin Wine Route is gaining international recognition for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc from estate wineries. The Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve offers exceptional hiking on the surrounding mountains. The Old Elgin Packhouse market is a popular weekend arts and food destination.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre is modest but functional, with a main road, supermarkets, and service businesses. The surrounding valley is blanketed with apple orchards and wine estates. The R321 Elgin Valley road passes through orchards and wineries toward Hermanus. Theewaterskloof Dam is 30 km south. Township areas serve the large farm worker community. Most accommodation is on wine estates and farm cottages rather than in town.
Economy & Industry
Apple and pear farming and associated cold storage and logistics are the primary industries. The wine industry, while newer, is growing rapidly. Agri-processing and packhouses are significant employers. Tourism to the wine estates, Old Elgin Packhouse market, and Hottentots Holland Reserve generates weekend visitor spend. Retail and services are secondary economic sectors.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Grabouw is 65 km from Cape Town on the N2 through Sir Lowry's Pass — a spectacular mountain road. The Old Elgin Packhouse market on weekends is a Cape Town favourite for artisan food and crafts. Wine estate tastings require appointments — book ahead. Apple season (February–April) is the best time to buy fresh fruit from farm stalls. The Hottentots Holland hiking requires a Cape Nature permit. The Elgin-Grabouw valley has limited accommodation; combine with Hermanus or Cape Town.
