History
Fort Beaufort was established in 1822 as a British military outpost during the Cape Frontier Wars on the eastern frontier of the Cape Colony. Named after Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort, the fort was garrisoned throughout the frontier conflict and played a key role in several wars. The town that grew around the fort developed as an agricultural service centre for the fertile Kat River valley, which proved ideal for citrus production.
What Fort Beaufort is Known For
Fort Beaufort is known for its colonial military heritage — the Military Museum in the town's 19th-century building is one of the Eastern Cape's better-presented small museums. The Kat River valley around the town produces excellent citrus, and the area is known for navel oranges and other citrus varieties. The nearby Katberg Hotel and Forest are popular retreats in the Amatole Mountains. The nearby Adelaide and Bedford towns share the historic frontier character.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre along Durban Street is the commercial hub. Residential areas reflect the town's colonial character with older stone buildings alongside modern housing. Bhofolo and Newtown are the main township areas. The Kat River valley farms produce citrus, vegetables, and livestock. The Katberg Mountains are 25 km north with forests and hiking. Surrounding farms reflect the Eastern Cape's mixed farming character.
Economy & Industry
Citrus farming in the Kat River valley is the primary agricultural industry. Retail and government services serve the town and surrounding rural areas. Tourism to the Military Museum and Katberg Mountains generates some income. Healthcare and education are steady employment sectors. The broader Amatole District's agricultural economy is reflected in the Fort Beaufort area's mixed farming character.
