History
Empangeni was founded in 1930 as a commercial town to serve the surrounding sugarcane farming community. Its name derives from the Zulu word meaning "at the place of the wild fig tree." The town developed steadily through the mid-20th century and received a massive economic boost when the Richards Bay deep-water port and Huletts aluminium smelter were established nearby in the 1970s. Empangeni became the residential and retail base for the large workforce these developments attracted.
What Empangeni is Known For
Empangeni is known as the shopping and services capital of Zululand — the Empangeni City Mall and several other retail centres serve the entire North Coast hinterland. The uMhlathuze River flows through the area, with the nearby Goedgeloof Dam providing water sports. The town is the base for the uMhlathuze Local Municipality, one of the fastest-growing municipalities outside Gauteng. The Empangeni Rugby Club has a proud tradition in the KZN rugby community.
