History
British colonial forces settled the mouth of the Buffalo River in 1836 as a military post on the eastern frontier of the Cape Colony, one of the most contested zones of the Frontier Wars between British settlers and the Xhosa people. The settlement was named East London and its river harbour was developed in the 1870s as the main export point for wool, hides, and goods from the Rhodesian interior via rail through the Stormberg. Steve Biko, the Black Consciousness leader murdered in security police detention in 1977, was born nearby and spent formative years in East London.
What East London is Known For
East London is most associated with Mercedes-Benz South Africa, whose manufacturing plant at the East London Industrial Development Zone has produced the C-Class for both domestic and European export markets since 1962. Nahoon Beach is considered one of the finest and least commercialised surf beaches in the country, with consistent powerful swells. East London also has one of the few natural swimming lagoons in South Africa at Nahoon Estuary, surrounded by protected nature reserve.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The CBD sits on the western bank of the Buffalo River and is compact and functional. Berea Ridge above the CBD is the most established middle-class residential and restaurant strip. Nahoon and Beacon Bay to the northeast are more modern, suburban, and upmarket with the beach and Nahoon Estuary Nature Reserve nearby. Cambridge and Mdantsane to the west are the largest township areas — Mdantsane is one of the biggest townships in South Africa by population.
Economy & Industry
East London's economy is anchored by Mercedes-Benz SA and its automotive supply chain. The East London Industrial Development Zone has attracted pharmaceutical, food processing, and light manufacturing operations. The public sector — Buffalo City Metro, provincial offices, courts, and hospitals — is a major employer. Tourism is a small but growing contributor driven by the surf scene at Nahoon and the city's position on the Wild Coast route.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
East London Airport has daily flights to Johannesburg (1 hour 40 minutes) and is the most practical entry point. The N2 connects East London to Gqeberha 300 km west and to the Wild Coast and Durban 630 km east. The surf at Nahoon is world-class but powerful — it is not a beginners' beach. Load shedding affects East London as it does most Eastern Cape cities, so having a battery backup for extended stays is advisable.
