History
Clarens was established in 1912 and named after the Swiss village of Clarens on Lake Geneva where Paul Kruger, the last President of the South African Republic, died in exile in 1904. The town grew slowly as a farming community in the eastern Free State highlands. Its transformation into an arts destination began in the 1980s and 1990s when artists, potters, and craftspeople began moving to the area, attracted by the landscape and the affordable property. The village has grown significantly since then, with boutique accommodation, restaurants, and galleries proliferating to serve the weekend tourism market.
What Clarens is Known For
Clarens is best known for the concentration of art galleries along Church and Main Streets — a remarkable number for a village of only a few thousand residents. Clarens Brewery is one of the most celebrated craft breweries in South Africa and a central draw for visitors. The Golden Gate Highlands National Park, 25 kilometres from the village, offers extraordinary sandstone mountain scenery, hiking, and a small number of game species. The village is a starting point for hikes into the Rooiberge mountains.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
Church Street through the village is the gallery and restaurant core, with colourful sandstone buildings housing artisan studios and coffee shops. The village is compact and entirely walkable. Surrounding farms and smallholdings provide accommodation options. Fouriesburg, another small town, is 40 km to the north. The Golden Gate Highlands National Park to the northeast is the main natural attraction in the broader area.
Economy & Industry
Clarens's economy is entirely arts, tourism, and weekend hospitality. The gallery district, craft beer operations, and accommodation and restaurants are the economic pillars. Property values have risen significantly as demand for weekend retreats and semigration has grown. The surrounding farming community contributes modest agricultural activity to the broader local economy.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Clarens is approximately 330 km from Johannesburg via the N3 and N5 — about 3.5 hours. Long weekends and public holidays see the village extremely busy — book accommodation well in advance. The Golden Gate Highlands National Park requires a conservation fee for day visitors. The village is entirely walkable and a two-hour stroll through the gallery district covers the main attractions. The craft beer at Clarens Brewery is best sampled in the on-site taproom.
