History
The hot springs at Bela-Bela were well known to indigenous communities long before European settlement, used for healing and ritual bathing. The town was formally established in the early 20th century around a spa resort built to exploit the thermal waters. Renamed Bela-Bela (meaning "the water that boils itself" in Setswana) in 2002, the town has maintained its identity as a wellness destination while growing into a full-service regional centre.
What Bela-Bela is Known For
Bela-Bela is synonymous with the Aventura Bela-Bela (now Forever Resorts) thermal spa, which has multiple hot pools, waterslides, and chalet accommodation. The town is the southern gateway to the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve and its numerous game lodges. Zebula Golf Estate and Safari is a nearby upmarket lodge and golf resort. The surrounding bushveld offers excellent game viewing and 4x4 trails.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The resort complex is the town's defining feature, sprawling along the hot spring site. The CBD along Chris Hani Drive has hotels, restaurants, and a Pick n Pay and Checkers for supplies. Radium and Settlers are established residential suburbs. Surrounding areas are dominated by game farms, smallholdings, and eco-estates. The N1 highway is flanked by fuel stations and fast-food outlets catering to transit traffic.
Economy & Industry
Tourism is the primary economic driver — the resort draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Game farming and eco-tourism are significant growth industries in the surrounding Waterberg. Agriculture, particularly cattle and game, is practiced on surrounding farms. The N1 corridor generates retail and logistics activity, and the town is a service centre for surrounding agricultural and mining communities.
